HUNTINGTON BEACH — A 2-month-old girl died after her stroller was struck by a car in what police on Friday called a tragic accident.
Kathleen Hapke and her daughter, Sarah, were in the crosswalk at Warner Avenue and Springdale Street when they were struck by a car about 7 p.m. Thursday. The child, who was thrown from her stroller, suffered head injuries and later died at UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange. The mother suffered minor scrapes and cuts, but refused treatment.
Hapke, wrapped in a robe, her eyes swollen and red from crying, was being comforted by friends and relatives at her Huntington Beach home on Friday.
“She has lost her first child,” said family friend Monty Stoner, his voice cracking with emotion. “It’s so horrible.”
Huntington Beach Lt. Luis Ochoa said the 20-year-old Huntington Beach man driving the vehicle had not been cited. An investigation is continuing.
