St. Andrew’s Abbey hopes to “raise the roof” with baroque music and sung prayers at its benefit concert Sunday at Holy Family Cathedral in Orange.
The sixth annual Raise the Roof event will raise money for a new water system at St. Andrew’s Abbey, a Benedictine monastery in Valyermo, near Palmdale. The money will help replace the aging system that has been in place since the monks arrived in 1955.
The abbey was established by a group of Belgian monks who founded St. Andrew’s Priory in Si’Shan, China. When the monks were expelled from China by Communists in 1952, they founded the abbey in Valyermo. The concert is part of a tribute to the abbey’s founding fathers.
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $15 and can be bought at the door. The cathedral is at 566 Glassell St. Information: (818) 340-8125 or (714) 639-2900 Ext. 116.
