Special Education

My sister has been battling the experts and is determined to prove them wrong (“Bringing Special Ed to the Fold,” June 16). When my nephew, a Down syndrome child, was evaluated at age 3, the experts would not believe my sister’s assertion that he knew the alphabet. At her insistence they did test him and found that indeed he did know the alphabet.

My sister continued to work with my nephew, teaching him phonics, etc. At age 5 (and before he entered kindergarten), he started sounding out simple words and recognizing others by sight. Of course, school officials and teachers did not believe this either.

My sister will continue to fight the battle for her son’s education.
