Paving Way for Car Pools
Driving under stressful conditions can cause or contribute to high blood pressure and may even increase the likelihood of a stroke or heart attack, according to the Southern California Commuter Information Center. To reduce the risk, the group encourages ride sharing and has constructed a Web site to bring commuters together (https://www.socalcommute.org).
Most people who carpool do so with friends, neighbors and co-workers, but others aren’t so lucky. The commuter information center helps link potential car poolers and gives advice on how to format a successful ride-share program.
Also included on the site are “helpful tips” about vanpools, buses and rail service, as well as crisis assistance, bicycle commuting and on-road stress relief. Customized maps and a list of area park-and-ride lots are available as well.
Ride sharing not only cuts costs by reducing gas expenses and automobile wear and tear, but also may trim insurance premiums.
