Re “Trailer Dwellers May Lose UCI Home,” May 17:
As student residents of the trailer park at UC Irvine, we greatly appreciated the excellent article on our community. However, we wanted to clarify two points.
First, the university has made an oral agreement with residents to leave the park where it is for at least three years, not two.
Second, the suggestion that the university notified residents of the temporary status of the park is inaccurate. The vast majority of current residents purchased homes, many of them with nonmobile components, without being informed by the university that the trailer park land was intended for other uses.
Less than two years ago, the university was still giving written approval to residents who wanted to invest in nonmobile additions to their homes.
Any new plan needs to recognize that university management of the park in recent years has sanctioned investments that its student residents can ill afford to lose.
