Residents can still put their old telephone books to use as part of the South Orange County Telephone Book Recycling program, which runs through Saturday. State law requires all cities and counties to cut in half the amount of solid waste stored in landfills by 2000. The Pacific Bell directory program, which uses the paper from the old books to make new telephone directories, assists Orange County in meeting that goal.
Curbside recycling customers can place old phone books in the containers provided. Drop-off locations are available in Dana Point, Laguna Beach, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano for those in multifamily residences and businesses. Information: (800) 953-4400.
