The City Council last week unanimously approved plans to make police facilities earthquake-resistant. Council members raised concerns about the Police Department’s need for expansion, but according to a staff report, under a worst-case scenario, about 60% of the seismic retrofit work would remain intact if there were future expansion. A $270,000 design contract has been awarded to Black & Veatch. Last year, the city received a $2.2-million state grant to make City Hall, the Police Department and the Corporation Yard earthquake-safe. About $1.67 million of city funding is still needed for construction.
