League to Honor Sheriff and Couple

Ventura County Sheriff Bob Brooks and Mel and Nora Silberberg, co-presidents of the Conejo Valley Haverim B’nai B’rith, will be honored by the Anti-Defamation League for their community involvement and efforts in fighting hate crimes.
The Anti-Defamation League fights bigotry and collects information on hate groups nationwide. B’nai B’rith Haverim is a worldwide outreach organization that began in 1843.
“We look for anyone, elected officials and people who are in authority, who have a strong agenda against hate crimes,” said Martin Weisman, co-chairman for the event, which is the annual fund-raiser for the Anti-Defamation League.
Brooks is being honored for vowing to create a crime suppression unit that will go into areas where hate groups are prominent in Ventura County, a stance he took after this summer’s shootings at a Jewish day school in Granada Hills.
The Silberbergs are being honored for encouraging inclusiveness in their organization. Since becoming co-presidents two years ago, the couple have invited people of all denominations--not just members of the Jewish community--into Haverim B’nai B’rith.
The fund-raiser will be held tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Temple Adat Elohim, 2420 Hillcrest Drive.
