Bureaus Push Coastal Cleanup

In this year of ocean bacteria, the Anaheim/Orange County Convention Bureau is urging the tourist industry to hit the local beaches Saturday as part of the 15th annual Coastal Cleanup Day.
“We’re only asking for three hours of your time,” said bureau spokeswoman Elaine Cali, on the prowl for volunteers.
The bureau and its counterparts in Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, Laguna Beach and Dana Point raised $25,000 to help sponsor the event for the California Coastal Commission this year. The cleanup will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at locations from San Clemente State Beach to the Bolsa Chica Wetlands.
The 50,182 participants on California beaches last year picked up about 800,000 pounds of trash and recyclables, including more than 333,000 cigarette butts.
