HIGHLAND PARK — Occidental College was awarded a $399,654 grant to help revitalize the neighborhood near its campus.
The grant is part of $7.5 million distributed by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to 22 colleges in 16 states, said HUD Secretary Andrew Cuomo. The grant will help the college provide local communities with social programs.
Projects targeted for the money include providing after-school tutors for students of all ages from the Highland Park and Eagle Rock areas, said Occidental professor Jan Lin.
Grant money will also help create a community information Web site geared toward helping residents access information on educational and medical programs.
“Colleges and universities are economic engines and anchors of stability in our nation’s urban centers,” Cuomo said. “These grants will help these institutions more effectively address the needs of their communities.”
The yearly grants are a part of an initiative by President Clinton, Cuomo said.
The grants are intended to help communities reaffirm their commitment to learning and education.
