No. 1 Newport Harbor Defeats Laguna Beach

April Ross had 15 kills, 22 assists and six aces as top-ranked Newport Harbor defeated No. 8 Laguna Beach, 15-12, 15-10, 14-16, 15-3, in nonleague girls’ volleyball Wednesday at Newport Harbor.
Taylor Govaars had 14 kills for the Sailors (2-0).
Laurelee Neptune had 13 kills for the Artists (0-1).
In other nonleague volleyball:
No. 5 Irvine 3, No. 6 Capistrano Valley 1--Olivia Waldowski had 11 kills for Irvine (2-0) in a 15-1, 15-10, 11-15, 15-11 victory. Becky Warnick had 18 kills for Capistrano Valley (2-1).
In the Cerritos Gahr tournament:
Rosary 3, South Torrance 1--Renee DeLellis had 14 kills and five blocks, leading Rosary (4-1) to a third-place finish.
El Toro 3, Long Beach Millikan 1--Katherine Varin had 14 kills for El Toro (2-0), which won, 15-13, 5-15, 15-6, 15-9.
In nonleague girls’ golf:
No. 1 University 123, No. 2 Villa Park 129--Angela Won shot a one-over 37 for University (4-0) at Green River. Shelly Rayworth shot a 40 to lead Villa Park (1-2).
No. 3 Marina 267, Corona del Mar 279--Courtney Coebel was the medalist for Marina (2-0), shooting a combined score of 76 at Newport Harbor and Meadowlark. Corona del Mar is 1-1.
No. 9 San Clemente 155, Canyon 155 (San Clemente wins on tiebreaker, 58-61)--Jessica Clark’s 58 gave San Clemente (2-0) the edge in the tiebreaker at Anaheim Hills.
Dana Hills 141, St. Margaret’s 169--Sophomore Brittany Tall shot a 42 at San Juan Hills to lead Dana Hills (3-0).
In nonleague girls’ tennis:
No. 1 Newport Harbor 12, No. 10 Sunny Hills 6--Newport Harbor (2-0) swept all nine doubles sets for the victory over Sunny Hills (1-1).
La Habra 12, Los Altos 6--Senior Dianne Sonoff won 7-6 (9-7), 6-1, 6-1 to improve to 6-0 in singles this season for La Habra (2-0).
Los Amigos 12, Westminster 6--Senior Veronica Summers swept in singles to remain unbeaten on the season at 6-0 for Los Amigos.
Rosary 12, Marina 6--The Royals (3-0) were led by Susan Bruttig and Amara Boerner, who won in doubles, 6-1, 6-1, 6-2. Marina is 0-2.
Tennis matched postponed:
Wednesday’s scheduled girls’ tennis match between fifth-ranked Woodbridge and seventh-ranked Laguna Beach was postponed because of a scheduling mix-up. It will be made up next Wednesday at Woodbridge.
In nonleague boys’ water polo:
No. 10 Saddleback 19, Sunny Hills 3--Julian Gonzalez had five goals for Saddleback (2-1).
La Verne Bonita 7, El Dorado 6--Anthony Domenici scored the game-winning goal with 36 seconds left for Bonita.
