Carew Courtyard Set to Open

The Angels will dedicate the Michelle Carew Community Courtyard at Edison Field on Friday to honor the late daughter of batting instructor Rod Carew.

Located inside Gate 3 at Edison Field, the courtyard will feature a butterfly garden and a bronze bust of Michelle Carew, who died of leukemia on April 17, 1996. She was 18.

Rod Carew and Candace Steele of the Marrow Foundation will speak at the 6 p.m. event that precedes the Angels-Orioles game. Gates open at 5:30.

The Angels also announced that beginning next season, they will host an annual bone marrow drive at the courtyard to register potential donors. For further information on the donor program and how to become a donor, call (800) MARROW-2.

SOFTBALL

Two of Orange County’s top 18-and-under travel teams will play against the U.S. national softball team this weekend in Chula Vista.

The Orange County Batbusters will play a doubleheader Friday beginning at 6 p.m., and Gordon’s Panthers will play a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m. Both games will be played at Chula Vista Community Park near the intersection of Otay Lakes Road and Eastlake Parkway.
