PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad — The Caribbean’s first tropical storm of the year strengthened and pushed toward Jamaica on Friday after drenching islanders and leaving two dead in Trinidad.
Forecasters warned that Chantal had the potential to reach hurricane strength of at least 74 mph.
In Trinidad, lightning struck two brothers putting out pails to collect rainwater near the southern town of San Fernando, killing them instantly, Constable Shazeed Mohammed said. Heavy rains washed out roads and flooded villages.
