Coup Being Quelled, Government Says

Dissident soldiers in Ivory Coast seized the radio station in Abidjan today, but officials said loyalist forces were quelling an attempted coup. Heavy firing erupted late Sunday in the center of the commercial capital of the country, where military rule ended in a wave of protests in October. Interior Minister Emile Boga Doudou said dissidents were not in control of the radio and television stations but that there were soldiers inside holding hostages. Prime Minister Affi N’guessan said earlier that loyalist troops had ended a coup attempt.
