Bird Is Blamed for Interruption of Power

About 1,200 Southern California Edison customers were without power for several hours Sunday after a bird apparently came in contact with a power line and caused the outage, an Edison spokesman said.
The line at Bristol and Baker streets went down about 1:30 p.m., said Steven Conroy. By 5 p.m., all but about a dozen customers had service restored.
Some customers had complained earlier that the power was interrupted, restored and then went out again.
Conroy said the work crew likely ran tests, including temporarily returning power to some customers before the repairs had been completed.
Conroy said the outage was probably caused by a raptor that crews noticed on the ground near the downed line. When they take off, these birds’ broad wings can touch a second line, causing a short-circuit that blows out a transformer.
