A 21-year-old man who sought refuge inside a locked McDonald’s restaurant was shot to death Wednesday morning in what police believe was a gang-related attack.
The shooting occurred about 6 a.m., before the restaurant at Warner Avenue and Main Street had opened for the day. Police said the victim, Jermaine Kendrick of Santa Ana, ran to the drive-thru window and pointed up the street, yelling at the fast-food clerk, who could not hear him through the closed window.
“Then he ran around the McDonald’s toward the front doors, but they hadn’t opened yet,” Sgt. Raul Luna said. Kendrick returned to the window, still yelling and pointing, then fled.
Employees told police they heard gunfire, then saw Kendrick lying in the middle of the street. He died at the scene, Luna said.
Police found about a dozen shell casings and canvassed the area Wednesday morning in search of witnesses.
“It was very clear that their intention was to make sure he was dead by the number of shots that were fired and the trouble they went through to chase him down,” he said.
Anyone with information is asked to call Santa Ana police at (714) 245-8326.
