* Course: Cog Hill Golf and Country Club, Dubsdread Course (7,073 yards, par 72).
* Purse: $3.6 million. Winner’s share: $648,000.
* TV: ESPN (Today-Friday, noon-3 p.m.) and Channel 7 (Saturday, 12:30-3 p.m.; Sunday, noon-3 p.m.).
* Last year: Australia’s Robert Allenby beat Zimbabwe’s Nick Price on the first hole of a playoff.
* Last week: Phil Mickelson broke out of his Sunday slump, beating Billy Andrade by a stroke in the Greater Hartford Open. Mickelson shot a career-best 61 in the third round.
* Notes: Tiger Woods, the 1997 and 1999 winner, is making his first start since tying for 16th in the Buick Classic, 12 strokes behind winner Sergio Garcia. . . . The top eight finishers who are not otherwise eligible for the British Open will earn spots in the July 19-22 tournament at Royal Lytham and St. Annes. Also, seven players can earn exemptions based on the money list at the end of the event.

Jamie Farr Kroger Classic

* Course: Highland Meadows Golf Club (6,365 yards, par 71).
* Purse: $1 million. Winner’s share: $150,000.
* TV: ESPN (Friday, 10 a.m.-noon; Sunday, 1-3 p.m.) and ESPN2 (Saturday, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.).
* Last year: Sweden’s Annika Sorenstam won the fourth of five 2000 titles, beating Australia’s Rachel Teske on the second hole of a playoff.
* Last week: Betsy King won the ShopRite LPGA Classic for the third time, beating Canada’s Lorie Kane by two strokes. King, 45, has 34 victories in her Hall of Fame career.
* Notes: Sorenstam leads the tour with five victories and $1,144,324 in earnings. . . . Karrie Webb is back on tour after her grandfather’s death in Australia. She won the McDonald’s LPGA Championship two weeks ago, and took the U.S. Women’s Open in early June. . . . South Korea’s Se Ri Pak won the 1999 event in a record six-way playoff.

SENIOR PGA TOUR
Farmers Charity Classic
* Site: Ada, Mich.
* Schedule: Friday-Sunday.
* Course: Egypt Valley Country Club (6,909 yards, par 72).
* Purse: $1.4 million. Winner’s share: $210,000.
* TV: PAX (Friday, 10 a.m.-noon) and CNBC (Saturday-Sunday, 3-5 p.m.).
* Last year: Larry Nelson won the fourth of six 2000 titles, finishing with a tournament-record 18-under 198 total. Dave Stockton was second, three strokes back.
* Last week: Bruce Fleisher won the U.S. Senior Open for his first major title, beating Gil Morgan and Japan’s Isao Aoki by a stroke at Salem Country Club in Peabody, Mass.
* Notes: The Ford Senior Players Championship, the final senior major of the season, is next week in Dearborn. . . . Nelson has three victories this year and leads the money list with $1,204,167. He successfully defended his FleetBoston Classic title two weeks ago.
