Ex-Dictator Is Indicted

BUENOS AIRES — Former Argentine dictator Gen. Jorge Videla was indicted Tuesday on charges he conspired with other South American governments in the 1970s to eliminate political opponents.
Videla, 75, who was already under house arrest for alleged kidnappings of babies under his regime, was charged with being part of an “illegal organization”--the so-called Operation Condor pact between Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay.
Operation Condor allegedly involved joint operations and information exchange among the regimes for kidnapping, arresting, torturing and assassinating leftists and dissidents in the six countries.
