Re “Wal-Mart Tightens Gun Policy,” July 3: If the federal three-day waiting period is intended to prevent individuals who are a danger to themselves or others from owning a gun, then it is reasonable that an incomplete or inconclusive background check should preclude someone from purchasing a gun until it is determined the individual meets all requirements.
Thank you to the executives at Wal-Mart Stores for recognizing a potentially lethal loophole in our federal gun law and adopting a sensible resolution. It is in the best interest of everyone--including the NRA and gun-rights advocates--that guns get into the hands of those who intend to use them responsibly.
