Italian police have arrested eight men suspected of providing false identity papers for members of Osama bin Laden’s Al Qaeda network, a senior police inspector said.
The eight were seized Thursday in Milan, Italy’s financial capital, but a ninth suspect escaped.
Authorities said the group supplied Italian passports, national identity papers, driver’s licenses and residence permits as well as other European documents.
Massimo Mazza, head of Milan’s special operations investigation team, said he believed that the men may have provided false identity papers for some of the Sept. 11 hijackers.
