Architecture Firm’s Work to Be Exhibited, Basilica Discussed

* The Southern California Institute of Architecture Gallery will present an exhibition of work by Detroit-based Zago Architecture through Aug. 25. The firm has installed a three-dimensional grid of narrow, closely packed corridors and stairways that functions as a combination object, theater, lounge and refuge. Tonight is opening night and musicians will perform within the structure at 6 p.m. The gallery is housed in the former Santa Fe freight depot in downtown Los Angeles and is open daily from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Admission and parking are free. * Tonight, John Waite of John G. Waite Associates and Wayne Ruth of the Basilica of the Assumption Historic Trust Inc. will talk at the Getty Center about “Restoring the Light: Recent Developments With the Conservation of Benjamin Henry Latrobe’s Baltimore Cathedral.” Completed in 1821, the cathedral was the nation’s first Roman Catholic cathedral. 7 p.m. Call (310) 440-7300 or go to www.getty.edu/conservation.
* On Saturday, the Los Angeles Conservancy will give a walking tour of Union Station, Art Deco Los Angeles, Broadway theaters and Pershing Square landmarks. The tour is from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and cost $8. For information, call (213) 623-2489.
