Pacheco Drops Plan to Expand Council District
- Share via
Backing away from what appeared to be a losing battle, Los Angeles City Councilman Nick Pacheco said Monday that he no longer seeks to take parts of Councilwoman Jan Perry’s downtown district.
Pacheco’s decision came on the eve of a council vote to redraw the city’s 15 districts to reflect population changes in Census 2000.
The councilman said he did not want to pursue a fight that might be used as campaign fodder by secessionists.
For months, Pacheco--who represents parts of Eagle Rock and Boyle Heights--had sought to expand his district into the city’s core, taking over City Hall and surrounding areas. Perry, however, launched a battle to keep her district intact.
The City Council is set to vote on the new map today.
