Lowe Gets 10th Win by Limiting Rockies

Derek Lowe doesn’t get too many chances to end a losing streak--not with Pedro Martinez in the Boston Red Sox rotation.

When he gets the chance, though, Lowe can be every bit the stopper as the Boston ace.

“He’s developing into the same kind of pitcher,” Red Sox Manager Grady Little said Monday night after Lowe defeated the Colorado Rockies, 7-3, at Boston to become the American League’s first 10-game winner. “You know your team really expects to win a game when he goes out there.”

Lowe (10-2) gave up two runs and a season-high eight hits, struck out three and walked none to end Boston’s three-game losing streak. He left after six innings with a 7-2 lead as a precaution because a blister developed on his right thumb.

Lowe has only started three games this season after a Red Sox loss, and won all. Martinez, who typically follows the No. 5 starter in the rotation, has started four times after the Red Sox have lost two in a row and won all.

Detroit 6, Montreal 4--Robert Fick homered twice and drove in five runs to help the host Tigers end a six-game skid.

Adam Bernero (2-2) became the first Detroit starter to win since May 29.

Baltimore 8, San Diego 6--Melvin Mora hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the eighth inning at Baltimore and drove in a career-high five runs.

Mora hit a three-run double in the second inning. The homer was his third in four games.

Philadelphia 3, Cleveland 1--Terry Adams pitched six strong innings at Cleveland and the Phillies won for the fourth time in a row.

Adams (3-4) got 15 of his 18 outs on balls that never got past the infield.

Texas 8, Cincinnati 2--Ismael Valdes (4-5) took a shutout into the ninth inning at Arlington, Texas, and the Rangers ended a three-game losing streak.

John Rocker, recalled Sunday from triple-A Oklahoma, got the final two outs in his first major league appearance since May 18.

Minnesota 6, Atlanta 5--Cristian Guzman doubled in the winning run in the 15th inning at Minneapolis.

Kerry Ligtenberg (0-3), who had gone 11 consecutive appearances without giving up an earned run, gave up a two-out infield single to Tom Prince in the 15th. Prince scored on Guzman’s hit.

New York Mets 3, Chicago White Sox 1--Pedro Astacio (7-2) gave up five hits in seven innings and shook off nearly two hours of delays at Chicago.

The first pitch was delayed 1 hour 37 minutes because of heavy rain, and a power outage stopped play for 16 minutes in the top of the first inning.

Seattle 10, St. Louis 0--Jamie Moyer (6-2) pitched his first shutout in nearly four years and the Mariners pounded 14 hits at Seattle.

Ichiro Suzuki tripled, doubled and singled, Charles Gipson hit a two-run triple and Mike Cameron doubled twice for the Mariners.

Oakland 8, Milwaukee 6--Ramon Hernandez’s run-scoring double in the eighth inning gave the Athletics back the lead after they let a five-run advantage slip away at Oakland.

Florida 15, Kansas City 8--Derrek Lee homered twice for the second consecutive game for the Marlins, who scored seven times in the 14th inning at Kansas City, Mo.

Lee scored four runs and drove in three. The Marlins blew leads in the ninth and 12th innings.

Houston 4, Chicago Cubs 2--Wade Miller (1-2) pitched seven strong innings and won for the first time this season, and Lance Berkman hit his 20th home run for the Astros at Houston.
