Gregg Zaun saved his first career grand slam for a dramatic moment.
Zaun, pinch-hitting, connected on an 0-2 pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning for his first career slam, hitting a drive over the right-field wall to give the Astros a 7-4 victory over Byung-Hyun Kim and the Arizona Diamondbacks at Houston.
“It’s just an unbelievable feeling,” said Zaun, a Glendale native and La Canada St. Francis High graduate. “Those guys are the New York Yankees of this league. And to beat them like this and to get a grand slam was great.”
Kim (3-1) blew his second consecutive save chance, two days after giving up a pair of homers against the Astros.
Milwaukee 7, St. Louis 2--Jose Hernandez hit a bloop single with the bases loaded in the 11th inning, and the Brewers padded the lead with four more runs to win at St. Louis.
Cincinnati 5, Chicago 4--Russell Branyan’s two-run single in the 10th inning sent the Reds to the victory at Chicago. Sammy Sosa hit his major league-leading 27th homer for the Cubs.
Montreal 7, Pittsburgh 2--Vladimir Guerrero homered and extended his hitting streak to 20 games as the Expos scored six runs in the last two innings to win at Pittsburgh in a game called after six innings because of rain.
Philadelphia 7, Florida 3--Marlon Anderson tied a career high with four RBIs and Terry Adams (4-5) pitched seven strong innings, retiring the last 11 batters he faced, to lead the Phillies at Miami.
Atlanta at New York, ppd.--The Braves and Mets were rained out for the second time this season. There was no word on a makeup date.
