The Times reports that the Gold Line light rail project has finally been given approval to complete the street crossings remaining (May 17). I lived 30 feet from those tracks during the 1940s, when huge numbers of trains regularly rumbled along, crossing gates were nearly nonexistent and people still mostly managed not to get run over. I can only shake my head at the fuss over quiet, two-car trains that take 20 seconds to pass behind lowered gates. All the complaints and threatened expenses just to safeguard people who are too stupid to stop for lowered railroad-crossing gates.
