Robber Frees Hostages After 8-Hour Standoff

SAN ANTONIO — A gunman shot his way into a credit union and held two employees hostage for eight hours Tuesday before surrendering after what police called a bungled robbery.
The gunman at one point fired at police, but authorities did not return fire.
The two female hostages and the gunman left the San Antonio Federal Credit Union branch together at midafternoon. The gunman gave up without incident and the women were unharmed.
The man was wearing camouflage and a bulletproof vest and had apparently shot himself in the shoulder with one of his two guns before surrendering. FBI spokesman Rene Salinas described him as a “little mentally unstable.”
The gunman had blown a lock off the door and then shot out a window to get inside Tuesday morning, police said. The employees hid in a utility closet when they heard the shooting, Sgt. Gabe Trevino said. They somehow were able to notify police.
