10 Nations Sign Treaties to Join EU

Ten nations, most of them former parts of the Eastern Bloc, signed accession treaties to join the European Union at a ceremony in Athens.
Cyprus, Malta, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Slovenia signed accords that will bring them into the EU on May 1, 2004, pending referendums or other treaty approval processes.
