Dora hits the road

Nickelodeon’s bilingual, animated hit show for preschoolers, “Dora the Explorer,” has spun off into a nationally touring stage extravaganza for kids, written by “Dora” co-creator Chris Gifford.

“Dora the Explorer Live! -- Search for the City of Lost Toys,” which opened Wednesday at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, features costumed actors and puppet characters. Seven-year-old English- and Spanish-speaking Dora and her pals -- Backpack, Map, Boots the monkey, Benny the bull and Tico the squirrel -- take a tuneful journey through their tropical world. (Gloria Estefan’s up-beat anthem, “Get On Your Feet!” has been added to the TV series’ familiar songs.)

Dora’s Mama, Papi and Abuela make an appearance, and, just as in the television version, Dora asks the audience to help solve problems and puzzles that pop up along the way. Meanwhile, as usual, mischief-maker Swiper the Fox complicates things with his grab-and-hide tricks.
