WTO Considers Costs of Medicine

The U.S. and other key World Trade Organization members reached tentative agreement on a proposal to allow poor nations to seek alternatives to expensive patented drugs for diseases such as AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. The issue will probably be put to a vote of all 146 WTO members today in Geneva.
Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Peter Allgeier said negotiators are trying to find the proper balance between helping emerging countries and protecting pharmaceutical companies’ intellectual property rights.
