New York Atty. Gen. Eliot Spitzer said Thursday that he was flattered to be mentioned by retired Gen. Wesley K. Clark as a possible vice presidential running mate, though Spitzer said he was focused on his state job.
Clark, who is seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, made comments about Spitzer on Wednesday during a call-in program on C-SPAN, the public affairs cable TV network. “I’m going to put smart guys like Eliot Spitzer in positions where they can make a big impact in this country,” Clark said, according to the New York Times.
Spitzer has gained national attention for his investigations of Wall Street conflicts of interest and mutual fund industry practices. He has said he would like to be New York’s governor, though he hasn’t declared his candidacy. The Spitzer 2006 campaign finance committee is holding a fundraising luncheon in Manhattan on Dec. 11. Spitzer declined to say whether Clark had contacted him.
