Will Quadflieg, 89, who was one of Germany’s best-known postwar stage actors and who starred as Faust in the 1960 film of the same name, died Nov. 27, Hamburg’s Thalia Theater announced. The cause of death was not reported.
Quadflieg also played composer Franz Liszt in the film “Lola Montes.” His acting career began in 1933 and continued in Germany during the Nazi era.
After World War II, Quadflieg began a collaboration with director Gustaf Gruendgens that included the title role in Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s “Faust” in 1957-58.
In 1955, Quadflieg starred in “Lola Montes,” director Max Ophuls’ last film.
Born in Oberhausen, Germany, Quadflieg performed well into his 80s -- mostly at the Thalia Theater, where he received acclaim in Germany for his portrayal of Shakespeare’s King Lear in 1992. He retired from the stage in 1999.
