Panel Favors Ban on Head Scarves in Schools

A presidential panel backed a ban on Islamic head scarves in public schools as France debates how to preserve its secular identity while integrating its large Muslim population.
If it becomes law, the measure would also bar other conspicuous religious symbols, including Jewish skullcaps and large Christian crosses.
President Jacques Chirac is expected to announce soon whether he supports the panel’s recommendations.
