The Zoological Society of San Diego has laid off 34 employees, its first layoffs in 14 years, due to sagging attendance.
The action includes employees at both the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Wild Animal Park, spokeswoman Christina Simmons said Wednesday.
Animal care and other operations are not affected by the reduction in the workforce, she said.
The zoological society has 2,000 employees and a $100-million annual budget.
