U.N. Urges U.S. to Give North Korea Food Aid

The U.N. World Food Program has urged the U.S. to release 60,000 tons of food aid pledged to North Korea but held up amid anger over its monitoring of handouts, an official said.
The Rome-based WFP this week announced a $171-million emergency operation to feed 6.5 million North Koreans.
In February, the U.S. pledged 40,000 tons of food, and planned to send 60,000 more tons depending in part on whether Pyongyang lets donors track its distribution and provides access to all vulnerable groups in the country. Such demands have not been fully met, but the U.S. said it was considering the WFP’s request.
