From Times Wire Reports
Sierra Nevada means snowy mountain range in Spanish, but to drivers heading there for a winter visit, it might as well mean chains required. During the winter, storms come suddenly in the mountains, and police and national park officials say drivers would be wise to carry chains with them at all times.
“That’s the best way to do it,” Sonora-area California Highway Patrol Officer Tom Wills said.
When road conditions do lead Caltrans to require chains, signs warn drivers at least half a mile before chains must be attached.
