Sewage Closes Aliso Beach

County health officials closed 2,000 feet of Aliso Beach in Laguna Beach on Tuesday after raw sewage leaked from a pump station in the beach parking lot and made its way to the ocean.
A surfer spotted the sewage overflowing from manhole covers in the beach parking lot at Aliso Creek and South Coast Highway about 7:40 a.m., officials said.
About 1,000 gallons escaped, and workers were able to recover about 440 gallons. The station was shut down until 10 a.m.
Officials are investigating the cause of the leak but believe it originated with an electrical problem at the station, which pumps sewage to a treatment plant.
County Health Care Agency officials closed the beach 1,000 feet up coast and 1,000 feet down coast of Aliso Creek for at least three days.
