The city has tentatively agreed to become the latest jurisdiction in San Diego County to outlaw watching illegal street races.
The City Council voted Wednesday to make it a misdemeanor to watch cars race on Escondido streets.
Spectators would face a maximum penalty of a $1,000 fine and a year in jail.
The council is scheduled to take a second and final vote on the proposal in 30 days, after which it would become law.
The city of San Diego and suburbs of La Mesa, Lemon Grove, San Marcos, Santee and Vista have adopted similar laws targeting race spectators.
