Illegal-Immigrant Arrests Rise in 3 States

The number of illegal immigrants arrested in Colorado, Wyoming and Utah soared last year to 12,183, a 32% jump over 2001.
Tony Rouco, supervisory agent for the Denver office of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, said 94 people were prosecuted in 2002 for smuggling undocumented workers into the country and three Denver-based asbestos removal firms were convicted of hiring illegal immigrants.
Most of those immigrants arrested were headed for farm jobs, he said.
