State Summit Would Address Violent Crime

Assemblyman Mervyn Dymally (D-Compton) announced Saturday plans for a series of discussions in California’s major urban centers that will culminate in a summit in Sacramento with the goal of reducing homicide and violent crime.
The announcement -- made in Darby Park during the Inglewood Drug and Violence Prevention Coalition’s annual “Call for Peace” -- describes plans for round-table talks in the state’s largest cities with local residents, officials from law enforcement, education, corrections, the National Rifle Assn. and other groups.
“We are going to have a thorough investigation on this culture of violence we have created,” said Delia Council, executive director of the Inglewood Drug and Violence Prevention Coalition.
Council said organizers plan to hold the summit in the summer of 2004.
