From Times Wire Reports
Post offices and schools were closed, hundreds of flights were canceled and buses and trains were idled in Italy as millions stayed home to protest government plans to reform the pension system.
The general strike was called by Italy’s three largest unions, which also organized about 100 demonstrations in piazzas across the country.
The strikers were protesting Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s resolve to overhaul Italy’s pension system by raising retirement ages and the number of years of work required.
