Bikers tread a slippery and unsafe slope

Although mountain biking is a great aerobic exercise, significant safety issues are involved, both to the rider and the other trail users. Oddly for an article in the Health section (“A Cyclist Hits Pay Dirt,” Aug. 25), little mention was given to safety. What is worse, the article describes a mountain biker advising “it’s best to let it rip down the rocks,” referring to a downhill ride over rocks. That’s great for orthopedic surgeons and manufacturers of the body armor worn by many mountain bike riders.
