Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra conductor Mariss Jansons is donating $100,000 in the form of a challenge grant to attract new donors to the financially troubled orchestra.
Jansons plans to announce his contribution and ask for matching donations this weekend, the opening weekend of the 2003-04 season.
The symphony has a projected $3-million deficit this season, $500,000 above estimates, after finishing last year with a $1.5-million deficit, said Tom Todd, president and chief executive of the symphony’s board of trustees.
