Charges Filed in 1994 O.C. Slaying

Times Staff Writer

A Westminster man was arrested Wednesday and later charged after DNA evidence linked him to the 1994 slaying of an 18-year-old man, the Cypress Police Department said Thursday.

Brian Zumbado, a 26-year-old construction worker, is suspected of fatally stabbing Eddie Alexander Young of Anaheim during a fight in a Cypress parking lot. Law enforcement officials say DNA samples taken from Zumbado after a 2004 conviction for spousal battery link him to the stabbing.

Zumbado was ordered to serve 120 days in jail and was placed on three years’ probation after pleading guilty to the spousal battery charges. As a condition of his conviction, Zumbado was required to submit to testing, and the results were added to the California DNA Data Bank.

Zumbado was taken into custody Wednesday evening in Santa Ana, shortly after meeting with his probation officer, Cypress Police Sgt. Jim Olson said.

He was booked Thursday at the Orange County Jail and charged with murder and the use of a deadly weapon, authorities said. His bail was set at $1 million.

On Oct. 30, 1994, Cypress Police responded to the Cypress Family Billiards in the 6200 block of Ball Road, where they found Young bleeding from a stab wound in his chest, authorities said. Young died at Los Alamitos Medical Center.

Witnesses said they saw the fight but not the stabbing, police said. It was still unknown what prompted the fight or the stabbing, Olson said.

Zumbado is scheduled to be arraigned today at the West Justice Center in Westminster.
