NATO and Afghan troops backed by air power clashed with suspected Taliban militants in southern Afghanistan, leaving as many as 30 militants dead and 15 wounded, a provincial police chief said.
The troops surrounded a compound believed to be a Taliban base in Helmand province and fought a five-hour battle with the militants that included airstrikes, Helmand Police Chief Ghulam Nabi Malakhail said.
NATO confirmed the clash but gave no militant casualty figures. No casualties were reported among NATO or Afghan troops.
