Police break up opposition rally

Riot squads fired tear gas and water cannons to drive stone-throwing protesters off the streets of a troubled township in Harare, the capital, after preventing the main opposition party from holding a major rally.
The Movement for Democratic Change said police had arrested more than 120 of its members while blocking the rally. Armed police had defied a court order to allow the meeting to proceed, sealing off the sports ground where the rally was to be held and arresting dozens of people, witnesses said.
