A 14-year-old boy died Friday after collapsing in the weight room of Marina High School in Huntington Beach.
Freshman John L. Rambo of Huntington Beach was lifting weights when he suffered a seizure about 8:30 a.m., according to Huntington Beach Police Lt. Terry Lindsey. School employees administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation and called 911.
Paramedics took the teen to Huntington Beach Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Lindsey said.
An autopsy will be performed today, but it could be some time before the cause of death is determined, said Jim Amormino, spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and coroner’s office.
School officials were tight-lipped about the incident.
Students, who described Rambo as quiet, learned of the death from their third-period teachers.
“Everyone was talking about it after they told us,” said sophomore Anne Hermosillo, 15.
Allen Troung, 15, shared a physical education class with Rambo. “He kind of kept to himself, but it was shocking when we were told he died,” the sophomore said.
Times staff writer Seema Mehta contributed to this report.
