When love runs into challenges
Love found and lost is the heartbeat of George Gershwin’s deeply moving opera “Porgy and Bess.” Few today dispute the work’s status as a full-fledged opera rather than as a Broadway musical, which was how it premiered in a heavily cut version in 1935. Indeed, the grimly realistic story of a disabled beggar who wins the love of a brassy but vulnerable woman has only grown in stature.
In this Los Angeles Opera presentation, Kevin Short and Alfred Walker will alternate as Porgy. Morenike Fadayomi and Indira Mahajan will alternate as Bess. Other double-cast
