A French aid worker kidnapped by the Taliban five weeks ago has been freed, the International Committee of the Red Cross said. Eric Damfreville was abducted April 3 with a female colleague from the Terre d’Enfance group and three Afghan staff members.
Celine Cordelier was freed April 28, but there was no word on the Afghans.
Meanwhile, U.S. officials have confirmed that there were civilian casualties in a battle involving Taliban and U.S. forces Tuesday north of Sangin. Afghan officials have blamed U.S. airstrikes for the deaths.
