Police detained former Khmer Rouge Foreign Minister Ieng Sary and took him to Cambodia’s U.N.-assisted genocide tribunal today for prosecution.
Tribunal spokesman Reach Sambath said Ieng Sary and his wife, Ieng Thirith, had been brought to court according to a warrant issued by the tribunal, but he gave no details of the charges they faced.
Both are accused of involvement in the slayings of political opponents during the 1975-79 radical communist Khmer Rouge regime, according to documents from prosecutors. Ieng Thirith served as the regime’s minister of social affairs.
The policies of the Khmer Rouge are widely believed to have resulted in the deaths of about 1.7 million people.
