Spitzer drops plan for licenses

New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer will withdraw his plan to grant driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants during a meeting this morning with the state’s congressional delegation in the Capitol, a Spitzer spokeswoman confirmed Tuesday night.
The move comes as Spitzer faced mounting pressure from Democrats and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to drop the plan, which has provoked a public backlash and given Republicans a weapon against Spitzer’s allies, including Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.).
Spitzer will make the argument that “immigration is a federal, not a state issue,” said one person familiar with the governor’s thinking.
